Hereford & District u3a (University of the Third Age) was founded in 1992 and now has a membership base approaching 150. It’s a self-help organisation for people no longer in full-time employment, offering educational, creative and leisure activities in a friendly, non-academic setting — no assessments or qualifications, just learning for pleasure, following the u3a national motto “Learn, Laugh and Live.”
Their main social gathering at the Kindle Centre takes place on the first Thursday of every month, 10am–12pm, with free parking for up to 3 hours (extra free parking available if you register your name and vehicle registration with reception). Each session features a different guest speaker on a wide-ranging topic — recent and upcoming talks include “Look Up in Hereford,” “Showboat,” “A Rose By Any Other Name,” “The Herefordshire Hoard,” and “Fakes & Fortunes, Art & Antiques, Forgers & Dealers,” running through to an AGM talk (“How Big is the Universe?”) in April 2027.
Beyond the monthly main meeting, they also run smaller interest groups (part of the wider u3a model of members teaching and learning from each other) and occasional standalone sessions at the Kindle Centre — for example, an “Ability Net: Introduction to AI” workshop hosted by Richard Connelly on 21 October 2026. Annual membership is £20 and covers access to both the monthly meetings and all group activities; the Membership Secretary can be reached on 01432 273081.
